Pioneer is among the first electronics companies to offer CarPlay enhanced radios for your car. Just install the radio, plug in your iPhone with a lightning cable and you're good to go.
Pioneer has demoed Apple CarPlay integration with its NEX dash systems as we draw closer to the final iteration of the experience. It's simple to get started: you just plug in an iPhone and the software opens automatically and takes over the car's display with CarPlay Pioneer will be loading Apple's in-car suite to both new and current hardware already available on the market.
Once the iPhone is connected to the dash system, CarPlay makes it possible to access contacts, multimedia and other data stored on the smartphone through the car display – it's worth noting that CarPlay only works with the iPhone 5 or higher, running at least iOS 7.1. The AVH-8000NEX, which was demonstrated with CarPlay, has a capacitive touch screen, making the experience seamless once the iPhone was plugged in. As well as the 8000NEX above, the following Pioneer aftermarket solutions will also be updated for CarPlay:
Pioneer has verified that they will have a variety of CarPlay-favorable aftermarket dashboard systems accessible this summer as a result of an upcoming firmware upgrade. The five receivers expected to get that upgrade are AVIC5000NEX, the AVIC 8000NEX, AVIC7000NEX, AVIC6000NEX and AVH 4000NEX. The upgrade will enable Siri commands, handsfree call management, media playback, GPS directions, and all another great stuff CarPlay is constructed for.
Pioneer was already pretty open about working on CarPlay-compatible aftermarket dash systems, and it’s great to see they followed through. Apple's CarPlay update is coming Summer 2014.
